My Views 4 Theory

Robert Sampson and John Laub helped identify a theory that could help explain how age could compare to what they considered turning point in a juveniles choice to act in a delinquent or a non-delinquent manner. Sampson and Laub believed that not only a person environment, but also there social, personal, and explanations of life, will help mode the life style that he/she will travel.

Which make me wander how can one stop or at least try to slow the deviant actions that are carried out by the delinquent offender? Adding on to the trait theory we learned last chapter, the more social and personal roles that a youth participates in their everyday life will set in the pavement of the path traveled. But what things can people do to increase chances of deterring away from delinquent acts? Increasing social capital or time spent away from delinquent peers and building more positive relationship that will then increase the perceptive of society on the once stigma offender. Which some youths will have turning points described by Sampson and Laub, defined as events such as marriage, kids, military or army, careers, education, and/or other events that would help a youth decrease delinquency.

Today’s modern time, this theory can be tested and upheld through the dirt except for one part which portrays to the many people who are employed by the military, army, navy, marines, and any other person who has to interact with war. The age theory states that a turning point in a youths life could be joining the services. Which is a very brave and heroic action to do especially if that person has upheld an image that is deviant. Behavior problems can be reinstated once a person is put into such a horrifying, deadly experience such as being in war environment. Sadly some solider come back ( even some with little or no deviant past) become alcoholics, junkies, or users of drugs to erase all the painful images that were prescribed to them for fighting in war. This will farther onset many other negative behaviors that could lead to discharge, criminal background, and other events.

Focusing next, on a more biological theory presented by infamous Richard Herrnstein and author of “Broken Windows Theory” James Wilson. According to Juvenile Delinquency the Core, both Wilson and Herrnstein developed a theory that stated “people “choose delinquency” over non-delinquent behavioral alternatives”. Thus, latent trait was basically described as a biological composure that made someone choose to act out in delinquency. Juvenile Delinquency the Core, further stated that “…latent view, the propensity or inclination to commit delinquency is stable, but the opportunity to commit delinquency fluctuates over time.” Which back is the same as earlier with adding roles take away the time one has to commit crime, when they are committed to acting in each role as they should. But, what differs is instead of being external factors the latent theory deal with internal or hidden factors.

In today’s modern time crime could be controlled easier with a resolution to the latent theory. A doctor can easily prescribe a medicine to help with ADD or ADHD which could slow or stop impulsiveness. Parents could dedicate time or/and money to help their child not only learn but exceed in school, by simply hiring a tutor. External factors such as shown with “age-grade theory”, can not easily be cured. A doctor can prescribe a pill that will then make the child grow up over night and take on a higher role in society. Most families can’t afford to just pack up and move their child out of their environment that may have neighborhood peers who have helped contribute to their child acting in a deviant manner. The problem may last a lifetime, but so could the effects of the treatment of either one of these theories, IF and if, they were properly treated by a professional administrative and a dedicated family.
